Phulbari, LLC™ was
born in the fall of 2003...but the idea of it has been building
for much longer.
Even before Rajeev and Karen Karki met or married, Nepal was a
place near to their hearts. Rajeev was born and raised in Nepal,
and Karen spent time there on mulitple trips after college. Though
living in Indiana, Nepal was never far from Rajeev and Karen's thoughts.
As the difficulties in Nepal continued to grow, they searched for
a way that they could be involved - even in a small way - in helping
its people. Through months of dreaming and brainstorming, the idea
of Phulbari came to be.
Phulbari™ was designed to be a marketplace where unique items
from diverse cultures would be offered. As these products are sold,
Phulbari™ seeks to aid in bettering the lives of the men and
women who produce the goods, offering fair wages and opportunities
for self sufficiency. Phulbari™ began in Nepal, but Rajeev
and Karen hope it will continue to expand into other regions, offering
opportunities to the poor around the world.
Phulbari means "garden" in the Nepali language, and that
is what Karen and Rajeev hope it will truly be. A beautiful garden
is formed by each different plant and flower that adds its unique
characteristics there. In the same way, it is our hope that Phulbari™
will be a beautiful collection of diverse cultures that enrich our
world and demonstrate the handiwork of our Creator.
